Foods to boost sex drive – and the common things that affect performance

Both men and women can fall victim to a lack of libido at some point during their adult lives.

Exhaustion and stress can cause sex drive to plummet, as can certain medications such as opioids, anti-psychotics, cancer treatments and beta blockers.

But, according to nutrition Sarah Flower, you can boost your sex drive by making some simple changes to your diet. Here are the top foods to choose to get in the mood, and a few things to avoid.

Dark chocolate

As well as boosting blood flow, dark chocolate increases the feel-good hormones serotonin and dopamine, helping to lower stress levels and promote relaxation, which help to get your in the mood for some loving.

For these reasons, dark chocolate is the perfect accompaniment to a quiet night in.

Oysters

Oysters have a reputation of being a libido booster. Whether it is the shape and texture of the shell or the fact that they are packed with lots of libido boosting zinc, minerals, and amino acids, is unclear.

Importantly, they are also packed with B vitamins which help with the all-important circulation in the heat of the moment.

Watermelon

As well as being rich in lycopene, watermelon also contains citrulline, which converts to the amino acid Arginine.

This helps relax blood vessels similar to the way Viagra works, says Flowers.

Ginger

Ginger is more often known for its anti-nausea and circulation boosting properties, however it can also boost sex drive.

Try some ginger tea, or grate a little ginger into a spicy curry alongside chilli.

Chilli

Chillies help speed up the metabolism, increase blood flow, plump your lips and releases feel-good endorphins.

The nutritionist suggests combing chilli with dark chocolate to get the ultimate stimulation.

Figs

These are said to stimulate fertility and the secretion of pheromones, so enjoy them in a light dessert after your ginger-infused curry.

Flowers also recommends checking vitamin D levels, as the sunshine vitamin plays an important role in our sex drive. “Vitamin D deficiency can lower hormones (oestrogen for woman and testosterone for men), affecting mood, sexual desire and performance,” she explained.

If you suspect levels are low, Power Health’s Vitamin D3 spray, available at powerhealth.co.uk, could help.

Just as importantly, lovers should steer clear of things that could lower their libido.

Alcohol can remove inhibitions, but a few too many drinks can affect performance.

Caffeine can have the same result, as coffee and caffeinated soft drinks are often very dehydrating. “They can also have negative effects on the adrenal glands, which – when coupled with stress and anxiety – can mean it’s harder get into the mood,” the nutritionist explained.

Viagra recently celebrated its 20th anniversary. Earlier this month, Britain became the first country in the world to allow the libido-boosting drug to be bought over the counter from pharmacies at £5 a pill, rather than on prescription.
